Arimidex (Anastrozole) stops aromatase from working in the body. Aromatase is an enzyme that produces estrogen from steroid hormones, including testosterone. Doing this lowers the amount of estrogen in the body. Medications disrupt the body’s production of hormones and can increase estrogen. Higher levels of estrogen can cause men to develop gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of the mammary glands. By reducing estrogen levels, Arimidex could prevent gynecomastia in men taking anabolic steroids.
